Fifteen

“Rick, I hate to ask you this, but can Annie stay with you while she’s stuck in gator form?” Maggie asked.

“What!” Annie shouted.

“I’m sorry. It’s just that our house isn’t gator-proofed. She is literally destroying everything,” Maggie explained.

“And you think my rented bungalow is?” Rick laughed.

“Well … we really don’t know how to take care of her as a gator. Do we just shove food down her throat? Will she eat the same thing as she does when she’s a human, or do we need to go hunt some small wildlife for her? Do we have to cook the wildlife, or will she eat it raw? I honestly don’t know what the hell to do!” Maggie tossed her hands in the air.

Rick could tell she was clearly frustrated by the whole situation and her inability to transform Annie back to her normal self.

“Why are you talking about me like I’m not even here?” Annie asked.

“Uh … sorry, babe. I just … please forgive me,” Maggie pleaded with Annie.

“Fine. So, I guess I’m crashing with you for a few days until I’m sorted out?” Annie asked, glancing toward Rick.

“It sure looks that way. Are you good with that?” he asked. The thought of spending untold hours or days with Annie seemed like nothing more than a miracle at best. Their relationship had always been fun and carefree until they had slept together. But she seemed different now. He still wanted to know what she was going to say to him the other night before their moment had been interrupted by the bar fight. Maybe he could find a way to coax it out of her.

“I’m not sure I have much of a choice,” Annie sighed.

“You always have a choice, Annie,” Rick said. The last thing he wanted was for Annie to feel like she had no option but to be with him or spend time with him. He wanted her but of her own free will. Not under some fucked up form of coercion.

“If I wasn’t a giant hideous gator, I’d hug you right now,” she replied.

“Aww, honey. You’re not hideous!” Maggie said.

“She’s right, you know? You are the sexiest gator this side of the bayou,” Rick said, and he meant every damn word of it.

“That’s sweet of you to say so. After all, my goal was to be a sexy gator capable of seducing you.” She laughed.

“Well, what do you say? Should we get out of here?” he asked, hoping she would show at least a small amount of enthusiasm about spending some quality time with him.
